What Is Applied Scholastics?

Applied Scholastics International was started in 1972 by a group of teachers who worked together to utilize (within the education system) the educational methods called “Study Technology” developed by L. Ron Hubbard. Using these tools the individual learns how to learn, how to overcome the common barriers or blocks to full comprehension.

From its beginnings more than three decades ago, Applied Scholastics staff and representatives have worked in partnership with government agencies, educators, schools, corporations, community groups and parents in numerous countries.

Today, more than 150 Applied Scholastics affiliated schools, tutoring centers and community literacy centers bring hope to millions in 53 countries on six continents.

Fundamental to all of these programs is the understanding that learning difficulties are typically rooted in a lack of knowledge and skill in how to study effectively – whether those studies are in a classroom, on the job or in daily life.

Applied Scholastics works to give learners, both youths and adults, and their teachers the tools needed to overcome the barriers to learning. These barriers block or reduce a person’s ability to learn and apply and cut them off from effective lifelong learning which is necessary for success in today’s societies.

Applied Scholastics International also publishes a series of books which present the Study Technology and other educational material developed by L. Ron Hubbard. These books and courses are laid out so that they are readily usable by children or those with little educational background and by adults.

Bringing Real Education to Children and Communities

Applied Scholastics licenses several hundred tutoring and community mentoring programs around the world. Here youth and adults learn skills which they will use to learn throughout life.

Primarily using volunteer tutors - many of whom are, themselves, program graduates - Applied Scholastics community tutoring and mentoring programs are actively bringing real literacy and learning skills to children and adults.

These programs address the needs of students who are studying below grade level at school or who have been completely left behind by an educational system that lacked the tools to address their learning difficulties.

They also provide assistance for adults who never achieved effective learning skills due to language barriers, poor schooling or a host of other reasons.

WORLD LITERACY CRUSADE

In the decade since the World Literacy Crusade (WLC) was established as a community response to the Los Angeles riots it has expanded throughout the United States and around the world.

In the United States, the World Literacy Crusade focuses heavily on inner city areas. With real education - the ability to learn and to think for oneself - young people turn away from gangs, crime and drugs as doors are opened to real success in life.

WLC also helps entire families by improving the literacy levels of parents, enabling them to better help their own children.

WLC further contributes to its communities by providing tutoring programs to assist local schools, such as an Englewood, California high school and a local elementary school, where the application of Study Technology has achieved major improvements in student test scores.

Isaac Hayes stated it succinctly: “This program hits at the heart of violence among our youth. It’s about more than getting an education. It is about getting hope and finding a way out.”

“Here’s a statistic: Out of a typical sampling of 500 inner city youth, Rev. Johnson would normally expect as many as 45 to die and at least one hundred to go to jail each year. Of the more than 700 young people who have gone through the program in the last few years, only one has died. Two have gone to jail.”

Hollywood Education & Literacy Project (HELP)

From a single center in Hollywood in 1997, the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (H.E.L.P.) has expanded to an international program with several dozen centers around the world. Relying primarily on volunteer tutors, the HELP program delivers more than 1000 hours of tutoring each week.

Key to H.E.L.P.’s success lies in its use of L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology. Tutors who work in the program are trained extensively in the use of these materials. H.E.L..P. has a carefully worked out line-up of study materials which are used to take the student - whether child or adult and whether facile or illiterate in English - to new levels of learning.

In recognition of its successful mentoring and tutoring programs, the HELP center, based in Hollywood, receives funding from the State of California’s Youth Mentoring Initiative and other sources which has enabled it to provide services to community youth and adults at no charge.

Upgrading Private Schooling

Nearly 100 private schools in Europe, England and the United States use Study Technology through trademark licensing agreements with Applied Scholastics International. In European countries government funding of such schools is the norm; in countries such as the United States, these schools are typically supported by fees from parents who wish their children to receive the best education available.

With Study Technology as a fundamental, these private school programs consistently provide quality education. For example, students from the Delphi Academy, a network of Applied Scholastics licensed schools in several cities in the United States, consistently achieve scores far above the national average. And, at Delphi Academy in Los Angeles, student scores on national math tests are routinely above grade level, with 8th graders often testing at a 12th grade level.

The Applied Scholastics network includes almost 100 private schools which have founded their curriculums on the base of L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology.

Student Successes

“I am the founder of a technology company that has grown from two employees to 1,200 in just over three years. I attribute much of my success to my education at the Delphian School in Oregon, which trains its students in the use of L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology. This technology allows you to get the most out of any subject. Knowing it, I was able to accomplish my post-high school education on my own. Being able to thoroughly understand any subject you tackle is an invaluable skill and L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology made this possible for me.” – S.D., Founder Earthlink Network

“My son was not doing well in school and I was called frequently as he got into several fights. A drug was prescribed for him but that left him passive and not extroverted enough to participate in class activities.

“I took him off the drug and brought him to Ability Plus School where within weeks he became less hostile, calmer and happier. The school staff, using Study Technology, were able to correctly detect and handle the exact barriers to my son’s learning. He is doing very well, enjoying school and is drug free. I am very grateful, as it is saving his life.” – M.L.

“The three weeks I spent studying the Study Technology were not only more valuable than the academic education I had to that point but it showed me clearly that I had been on a road to increasing confusion. The Study Technology has enabled me to personally learn anything I wanted to learn, from golf to electronics. It has also enabled me to build an organization that is currently introducing this technology to major corporations around the world.” – I.G.

“When I first started gang banging I was very bad. I used many different kinds of drugs. I didn’t go to school. I stole a lot of cars and mugged a lot of people too. I went in and out of jail. Then I started a program at the World Literacy Crusade. I studied Learning How to Learn. I had a big problem on comprehending when I read anything. Then I learned that when you get lazy or drowsy it’s because you have a misunderstood word. Now by taking courses, I learned how to spell and read better. I want to finish school now. I took my mind off the street and gangs. All I want to say is THANK YOU VERY MUCH, for everything you have done for me.” – L.L.

“I have never been happier in my life. There are no barriers that I can’t overcome; I have the basic understanding of how the English language really functions and can apply it accordingly. I want to thank L. Ron Hubbard for putting together an immaculate piece of work that enables any person to overcome the barriers of learning to embrace the eternal freedom that lies thereafter.” – F.N.

“By using Study Technology, I can thoroughly learn every aspect of a subject, eliminate whatever barriers and confusions come up and become confident that I know how to apply the data in real life.” — M.M., Student

The dictionary is a powerful tool in fighting illiteracy, I have learned. This has helped my reading comprehension enormously. Most important, I have received a tool with which I can help be a tutor to someone and give back to the community the reading skills I have received.” – B.W.
“ School had been very difficult for me, and I was just barely making a passing grade. I was always upset and frustrated. I did a course called Study Skills for Life. I was blown away. I never had so much drive, and I had never been so excited about studying. After doing that course and applying Study Technology, I enjoyed studying everything! I then did the Basic Study Manual, and I moved faster than ever on my studies. Study Technology has given me the tools to make my dreams become reality.” – Y.A.

“I grew up in Los Angeles in a family of 15. My mom was an alcoholic and I had to help support her and the family. I started using drugs as a teenager. As a kid I was kicked out of every school in LA County and placed in a group home. I ended up on cocaine and spent eight years in prison. Then I found the World Literacy Crusade where I had the opportunity to increase my reading skills and my ability to cope with life. I love the Study Technology. It has given me a new life. I have the knowledge and ability to learn anything now. I’m back at home now with family. I have a successful business. More importantly I have had the opportunity to get the technology of L. Ron Hubbard that saved my life. My purpose is to help others and that is why I will be working with the World Literacy Crusade to save other adults and children like me.” – R.B.

“I was told by many in my life I would never succeed in life - well, it’s not true. I must say it is fun to learn again - with L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology. It is a joy to know that I can learn and I can decide what I want to do. I feel good about myself as a person. Every chance I get I will share what I have learned with others.” – S.C.

“I have been applying the Study Technology to my life about four years now and it has helped me understand many subjects in school. This is wonderful, but I feel it has done much more than that for me. Primarily, the Study Technology has enabled me to accomplish things. By really understanding the data I learn, I am able to fully apply that data. As a result, I brought about wonderful changes in my own life and the lives of others. Without the Study Technology, this understanding and these changes would not be possible.” – R.H.

“I want to let you know how thankful I am that the Applied Scholastics Literacy program came along for me when it did. My ability to read was bad, about second grade level. I was not able to use the letters to sound out words. In order to get my daughter back, I needed to attend a lot of courses on parenting, but if I had not learned how to read and how to study, I would not have been able to get through the classes.” – O.L.

Improving Education Internationally Through Teacher Training

As important as it is to raise the educational skills of individual children and adults, the ultimate answer to the broad problems of education is to increase the effectiveness of the schools and teachers.

To accomplish this, Applied Scholastics International supports Study Technology-based teacher training programs in many countries.

For, as L. Ron Hubbard has said, “The end and goal of any society as it addresses the problem of education is to raise the ability, the initiative and the cultural level, and with all of that the survival level, of that society” and it is this level of broad improvement which is the ultimate goal of Applied Scholastics and its supporters.

For example, more than 7,000 teachers and teacher-trainers have been instructed in Study Technology in the People’s Republic of China; 1,500 in Venezuela; 3,000 in the Dominican Republic; 10,000 in Southern and Central Africa; and 40,000 in Mexico.

These teachers are given tools which enable them to open the doors to learning for their students.

Applied Scholastics provides teacher training programs in the United States, as well. For example, Professor Caroline Kyhl of Texas Lutheran University has been delivering special training seminars to teachers across the country in which she introduces them to the basics of L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology. She has delivered seminars to more than 3,000 teachers in addition to training her student teachers at Texas Lutheran.

"As a public school teacher dealing with ‘learning handicapped’ children I would not be able to do my job without the Study Technology of L. Ron Hubbard. Many of my students believed they had no hope of ever succeeding. With the use of Mr. Hubbard’s methods these students made remarkable gains. Their morale improved, their disciplinary problems vanished. Their parents couldn’t be happier. This is truly a miraculous tool for all educators."
Vicki Gordon
Teacher

“As an educator and author for over 25 years, teaching in public and private schools, working with adults in both educational and industrial environments, I have found the Study Technology of Mr. Hubbard to be invaluable. I have conducted seminars for adults and children across the world from Russia and China to the United States. Study Technology is a practical, effective tool to help people study and learn. It undercuts so-called ‘learning disabilities’. The concept of having the tools to help prevent or overcome barriers to learning is truly revolutionary. It is vital for new independent lifelong learning in the information age.”
