WHAT IS SCIENTOLOGY® AUDITING?
Home Page
“Auditing” is a word that comes from the
Latin word audire, meaning to hear or
listen. It is the application of exact
procedures of Dianetics and Scientology.
It is called auditing because it is
delivered by an “auditor” — one who is
trained in the application of exact
procedures of Dianetics and Scientology,
and applies these procedures to assist the
individual. The auditor listens, and
directs the individual’s attention, to
help him find out more about himself and
about life.
When properly practiced, Scientology
enables one to develop in all aspects of
life, both spiritual and temporal. It
addresses the individual and brings about
greater happiness, self-confidence and
ability by increasing a person’s awareness
and effectiveness in life.
THE PRACTICE OF SCIENTOLOGY
Within the vast amount of data which makes
up Scientology’s religious philosophy
there are many principles which, when
learned, give one a new and broader view
of life. These principles amount to a huge
area of observation in the humanities. The
data exists for a person to think with, to
work with, to wonder with, to accept or
reject as he wishes. It is a body of
knowledge there for the learning. There is
nothing authoritarian in it. It is
valuable purely as a body of knowledge.
From this body of wisdom the second
division of Scientology — the application
of the principles of Scientology’s
philosophy — is derived. The extraordinary
achievement of Dianetics and Scientology
has been the development of exact, precise
methods to increase man’s spiritual
awareness and capabilities. Other efforts
along this line provided only sporadic or
temporary results — if any. Using
Scientology, life-enhancing improvements
can be obtained when exactly applied.
The importance of application in
Scientology comes from the fact that L.
Ron Hubbard developed as part of the
religion an actual technology that enables
one to use his discoveries to better
oneself and others.
Technology means the methods of
application of the principles of
something, as opposed to mere knowledge of
the thing itself. And, using L. Ron
Hubbard’s technology, applying the
methods, one can heighten his perceptions
and awareness, increase his abilities and
lead a better, more fulfilling life. In
short, one can be unhindered by others’
ideas that man cannot change and that one
can be no better than he was born to be.
The term technology is used with regard
to the application of Scientology
principles. Many technologies are extant
today, technologies to build bridges and
technologies to fire rockets into space.
But with the work of L. Ron Hubbard, for
the first time there exists a proven,
workable technology to improve the
functions of the mind and rehabilitate the
potential of the spirit. This is auditing.
A DESCRIPTION OF AUDITING
Although the purely philosophical
aspects of L. Ron Hubbard’s work are
sufficient in themselves to elevate this
civilization, only auditing provides a
precise path by which any individual may
walk an exact route to higher states of
spiritual awareness.
The goal of auditing is to restore
beingness and ability. This is
accomplished by (1) helping the individual
rid himself of any spiritual disabilities
and (2) increasing individual abilities.
Obviously, both are necessary for an
individual to achieve his full spiritual
potential.
Auditing, then, deletes those things
which have been added to the reactive mind
through life’s painful experiences and
addresses and improves one’s ability to
confront and handle the factors in his
life.
Through auditing one is able to look at
his own existence and improve his ability
to confront what he is and where he is.
There are vast differences between the
technology of auditing, a religious
practice, and other practices. There is no
use of hypnosis, trance techniques or
drugs during auditing. The person being
audited is completely aware of everything
that happens. Auditing is precise,
thoroughly codified and has exact
procedures.
A person trained and qualified to
better individuals through auditing is
called an auditor. Auditor is defined as
one who listens, from the Latin audire
meaning to hear or listen. An auditor is a
minister or minister-in-training of the
Church of Scientology.
A person receiving auditing is called a
preclear — from pre-Clear, a person not
yet Clear. A preclear is a person who,
through auditing, is finding out more
about himself and life.
The period of time during which an
auditor audits a preclear is called an
auditing session. A session is conducted
at an agreed-upon time established by the
auditor and preclear.
Auditing uses processes — exact sets of
questions asked or directions given by an
auditor to help a person locate areas of
spiritual distress, find out things about
himself and improve his condition. There
are many, many different auditing
processes, and each one improves the
individual’s ability to confront and
handle part of his existence. When the
specific objective of any one process is
attained, the process is ended and another
can then be used to address a different
part of the person’s life.
An unlimited number of questions could,
of course, be asked — which might or might
not help a person. The accomplishment of
Dianetics and Scientology is that L. Ron
Hubbard isolated the exact questions and
directions to bring about spiritual
freedom.
The questions or directions of the
process guide the person to inspect a
certain part of his existence. What is
found will naturally vary from person to
person, since everyone’s experiences are
different. Regardless of experience or
background, however, the individual is
assisted in locating not only areas of
spiritual upset or difficulty in his life,
but in locating the source of the upset.
By doing this, any person is able to free
himself of unwanted barriers that inhibit,
stop or blunt his natural abilities and
increase these abilities so that he
becomes brighter and more spiritually
able.
There are no variables in the
technology of auditing, no random results
or haphazard applications. Auditing is not
a period of vague free association. Each
process is exact in its design and in its
application, and attains a definite result
when correctly ministered.
Scientology auditing can bring any
person from a condition of spiritual
blindness to the brilliant joy of
spiritual existence.
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION
In point of fact, communication is one of
Scientology’s most fundamental doctrines
and the basis for its core religious
services, auditing and training. A
substantial portion of the Scientology
scripture is devoted to the understanding
and application of communication,
including books, tape-recorded lectures
and training films. A Scientology auditor
studies communication and practices
communication techniques at many points in
his training, continually working to
achieve a perfect mastery of its formula.
Auditing becomes possible only through
application of the communication formula.
A person participating in auditing (a
“preclear” in Scientology) must direct his
attention inward to the deepest recesses
of his reactive mind to confront occluded
past incidents, including past lives, in
order to find the answers to auditing
questions, erase the harmful energy
contained in the mental image picture
recordings of these incidents, and thus
experience relief from spiritual travail.
The preclear is fully alert during an
auditing session and becomes even more
alert as auditing progresses. The auditor
and preclear work together to help the
preclear defeat the preclear’s reactive
mind. Auditing is not something done to
the person, but involves his active
participation to increase his
self-determinism. Using communication
alone, the auditor must direct the
preclear’s attention (with the preclear’s
agreement) to past moments of pain,
unconsciousness or misemotion.
The preclear, knowing that the auditor
is following the exact and predictable
communication formula, feels sufficiently
secure to allow the auditor to direct his
attention and to tell the auditor about
what he finds.
THE AUDITOR’S CODE
The auditor maintains and practices a code
of conduct toward his preclear known as
the “Auditor’s Code.” This is a doctrine
of rules which must be strictly followed
to ensure a preclear receives the greatest
possible spiritual gain from auditing, and
was evolved over many years of
observation. It is the code of ethics
which governs an auditor’s actions.
For example, in keeping with the
Auditor’s Code, an auditor promises never
to use the secrets divulged by a preclear
in an auditing session. Traditionally, all
communications between a minister and his
parishioners have been privileged and
confidential, and such is the case in
auditing. The confidences given in trust
during an auditing session are considered
sacrosanct by the Church, and are never
betrayed.
Auditing is only successful when the
auditor conducts himself in accordance
with the Code. An auditor never tells the
preclear what he should think about
himself, nor offers his opinion about what
is being audited. A goal of auditing is to
restore the preclear’s certainty in his
own viewpoint; evaluation for the preclear
only inhibits attainment of this goal.
Hence, such evaluation is prohibited by
the Code.
The qualities instilled by the
Auditor’s Code are essentially those held
to be the best in people. An auditor shows
his preclear kindness, affinity, patience
and other such virtues, to assist the
preclear in confronting areas of spiritual
upset or difficulty.
THE E-METER
The Electropsychometer, or E-Meter,
measures the mental state or change of
state of a person, helping the auditor and
preclear locate areas of spiritual
distress or travail so they can be
addressed and handled.
Auditing is assisted by use of a religious
artifact which helps the auditor and
preclear locate areas of spiritual
distress or travail. This religious
artifact is called an Electropsychometer,
or E-Meter. (Electro-psycho-meter from
electrometer, a calibrated device used for
measuring extremely low voltages and
psyche, the human soul, spirit or mind.)
The E-Meter measures the spiritual state
or change of state of a person and thus is
of enormous benefit to the auditor in
helping the preclear locate areas to be
handled. The reactive mind’s hidden nature
requires utilization of a device capable
of registering its effects — a function
the E-Meter does accurately.
When the person holding the E-Meter
electrodes thinks a thought, looks at a
picture, reexperiences an incident or
shifts some part of the reactive mind, he
is moving and changing actual mental mass
and energy. These changes in the mind
influence the tiny flow of electrical
energy generated by the E-Meter, causing
the needle on its dial to move. The needle
reactions on the E-Meter tell the auditor
where the charge lies, and that it should
be addressed through auditing.
Different needle movements have exact
meanings and the skill of an auditor
includes a complete understanding of all
meter reactions. Using the meter, the
auditor ensures the process covers the
correct area in order to discharge the
harmful energy connected with that portion
of the preclear’s reactive mind. When
charge lessens, the person heightens his
ability to think clearly in the area being
addressed and his survival potential
increases proportionately. As a result,
the preclear discovers things about
himself and his life — new realizations
about existence, the milestones that mark
his gains.
These realizations result in a higher
degree of spiritual awareness and
consequently a greater ability to succeed.
HOW AN AUDITING SESSION IS CONDUCTED
This is an auditing session. The auditor
is on the left; the preclear is on the
right.
Auditing consists of certain elements: the
preclear, the auditor, the auditing
process, communication, the Auditor’s Code
and the E-Meter. In combination, they
resolve the reactive mind.
An auditing session takes place in a
quiet, comfortable place where it will not
be disturbed. Usually the auditor and
preclear are seated across a table or desk
from one another with an E-Meter set up
for the auditor’s use. Before a program of
auditing begins, the preclear is
familiarized with the elements of auditing
during a period of orientation so he knows
what to expect in a session. The auditor
also ensures the preclear has no
distractions or upsets to prevent him from
devoting his full attention to the process
used in the session.
Different types of auditing are used
for each preclear, depending upon his
concerns during the session and his
earlier auditing. Although auditing
addresses the individual, and each
individual is different, a precisely
delineated gradient of processing steps
must be followed to achieve personal
spiritual freedom for everyone.
By using exact questions and the
E-Meter, the auditor first locates an area
of charge in the preclear’s reactive mind
to address with the process. When the
auditor finds something in the reactive
mind, the meter needle surges, indicating
that the subject of his questioning
contains charge.
Once an area of charge or upset has
been located, the auditor then asks the
process question or gives the directions
needed to assist the preclear in examining
that upset. The preclear is now inspecting
his reactive mind.
The auditor guides the preclear to look
at this area more thoroughly. He continues
the process and makes notes of the meter
reactions and data recovered by the
preclear to help chart progress. He abides
by the Auditor’s Code, never evaluating
the data being recovered by the preclear.
As the process continues, more and more
data from that area of the reactive mind,
heretofore hidden from the person’s
conscious awareness, becomes available in
the analytical mind of the preclear. The
questions and directions of the particular
process help the preclear discharge the
harmful energy or force connected with
incidents or situations in his past. As
the charge lessens, the preclear’s
awareness of the area increases.
The auditor continues to guide the
preclear’s attention to the area.
Reactions on the E-Meter aid him to direct
the preclear to pull more and more data,
previously unknown to the preclear, out of
the reactive mind and return it to his
analytical awareness. Ultimately, the
preclear becomes completely aware of the
content and is able to view it as it is,
without his awareness clouded by
reactivity.
During auditing, a preclear has many
realizations about life. Such discoveries
are known in Scientology as cognitions. A
cognition is something a person has come
to realize. It is a “What do you know, I
just realized why I always felt that way
about . . .” kind of statement. Cognitions
result in a higher degree of awareness and
consequently greater abilities to succeed
in life. When such a realization occurs,
that portion of the reactive mind ceases
to register on the E-Meter and the needle
freely sweeps the dial rhythmically back
and forth, a phenomenon plainly visible to
the auditor.
The preclear has gained a higher degree
of awareness and rid himself of, perhaps,
an irrational fear, psychosomatic illness
or psychosomatic disability. The source of
what had been bothering him had been
unknown, but, once discovered, its power
is nullified. The process employed in the
auditing session has served its purpose
and can be ended. The auditor now proceeds
on to additional processes in further
auditing the preclear.
As more and more areas of the reactive
mind are addressed and alleviated through
auditing, its adverse effects continue to
lessen and the individual becomes happier,
more spiritually aware and more in control
of his life.
WHY AUDITING WORKS
In a session, the analytical mind of the
preclear is assisted by the analytical
mind of the auditor in order to vanquish
the preclear’s reactive mind.
The preclear is victimized by his
reactive mind. When the reactive mind is
restimulated, a person is affected by the
harmful energy it contains. Since the
reactive mind is hidden, the preclear
cannot handle it by himself. Witness the
thousands of years man has philosophized,
“soul searched” and tried to understand
himself and his motives to no avail. In
the absence of an auditor, the strength of
the preclear’s dynamic thrust is less than
the force being exerted by the reactive
mind.
One of the primary reasons auditing
works is because the strength of the
auditor’s dynamic thrust is added to the
preclear’s dynamic thrust and these two
combined are greater than the single force
of the preclear’s reactive mind. Working
together and applying L. Ron Hubbard’s
precise technology, the preclear’s
reactive mind can be erased.
Each time an area of charge is released
from the reactive mind, the preclear’s
awareness increases. This increase of
awareness builds from auditing session to
auditing session and the preclear
gradually becomes more and more aware of
who he actually is, what has happened to
him and what his true spiritual potentials
and abilities are.
VALIDATION OF RESULTS
Auditing gains which a person feels
subjectively can also be shown objectively
through testing during the course of an
auditing program. Numerous tests are used
by technical staff to help gauge a
preclear’s progress. These tests measure
the preclear’s ability prior to starting
an auditing program and provide a
prediction of how much auditing it may
take to achieve a certain result with the
preclear. When the preclear is retested
afterwards, the improvements he is
experiencing personally can be plotted on
a graph which validates his gains. The
results are used by the auditor to help
determine further processes to audit.
Though testing is primarily meant to
assist technical staff to ensure a
preclear derives the greatest spiritual
benefits in his auditing, the consistent
results observed have changed man’s
viewpoint of himself in many regards.
Prior to Dianetics, psychiatry and
psychology were adamant in their assertion
that a person’s ability and intelligence
could not be changed. Their pronouncements
were disproven in the face of study after
study wherein persons showed dramatic
increases in both areas after auditing.
One routine test is the Oxford Capacity
Analysis (OCA) which accurately measures
ten different personality traits. These
rise markedly in auditing, reflecting the
preclear’s gains. Preclears report being
calmer, more stable, more energetic and
more outgoing as a direct result of
auditing, and scores on the OCA furnish
corroborative data.
Aptitude tests are also a reliable
indicator of auditing results.
Improvements in aptitude test scores
correlate with a decrease in propensity
towards accidents. Many other tests are
available which measure coordination and
perceptions such as vision, hearing,
colorblindness, balance and so on. These
functions also improve as a result of
auditing.
Naturally, individual progress is
variable since it is largely influenced by
the preclear’s dedication and the
frequency of sessions. Therefore, clearly
defined rates of improvement are
impossible to establish, and the Church
makes no claims or guarantees of the gains
someone will make in auditing. Church
staff, however, have seen so many
remarkable improvements in parishioners
that they expect such results as a matter
of course.
COMPARISON TO EARLIER PRACTICES
Auditing is quite different, both in terms
of approach and result, from other efforts
which purport to help man improve his lot
in life.
In psychoanalysis, for instance, the
analyst does not accept what the person
says but interprets it, evaluates his
condition for him, reads sexual
significance into his statements and tells
him why he is worried, all of which merely
confuse a person further and have no
helpful effect. In auditing, what the
preclear says is never evaluated and his
data is never refuted. To do so would
totally violate the Auditor’s Code. Nor in
auditing is the preclear encouraged to
ramble on without guidance, ransacking the
millions of incidents in his reactive mind
and restimulating many, in the hope he
might stumble across the right one.
In the more brutal practice of
psychiatry, force (physical, chemical or
surgical) is used to overwhelm an
individual’s ideas and behavior and render
the patient quiet. There is no thought of
gain or help here but only of making
patients more manageable. Auditing bears
no resemblance to any part of this field.
Similarly, auditing bears no
resemblance to psychology, which is
primarily the study of observing responses
to stimuli and provides no means of
producing actual improvement. Other
practices such as hypnotism consider that
a person has to be put into a state of
lessened awareness (i.e., a trance) before
anything can be done. Auditing is quite
the opposite and seeks to wake people up,
not put them to sleep.
Past efforts to help man sought to do
so by enforcing moral codes or standards
of behavior and conduct but, having no
knowledge of the reactive mind or means to
relieve its irrational dictates, they
achieved no lasting improvements.
Auditing is quite different from these
past practices, many of which were
impositive and some, like psychiatry,
which are actually harmful. In auditing
one follows a precisely mapped route which
leads to specific improvements and it is
only the individual being audited who says
whether these have been achieved or not.
The preclear determines when he has
regained an ability or rid himself of a
spiritual barrier to living, not anyone
else. The auditor continues to minister to
the preclear until the preclear knows of
his own volition that he has succeeded. It
is not the auditor or anyone else in
Scientology who says the preclear has made
a gain. The preclear himself knows. Given
that the goal of auditing is
rehabilitation of one’s own potentials,
the gains can really be determined in no
other way.
Auditing is made up of common
denominators which apply to all life.
There are no variables in auditing; the
same procedures apply to all cases. Only
auditing restores to the individual his
native potentials, enabling him to be the
person he knows he really is. Only
auditing frees a person from the traps of
the reactive mind.
RESULTS
While the results that can be obtained
from use of Dianetics and Scientology
principles and the application of its
techniques are best understood by seeing
it for oneself, here is a sampling of the
gains Scientologists report having
experienced from Scientology auditing
services. These are just a few of the
millions of successes on file in churches
around the world relating to the benefits
received from Scientology auditing.
The following should not be construed
as claims made by the Church concerning
personal benefits any individual will
experience. The Church provides the
services. The results speak for
themselves.
“My success ranks with biblical
references to the blind seeing, the lame
walking and people being raised from the
dead! What the top medical authorities in
the fields of internal medicine,
orthopedics, radiology and neurology could
not handle in three years, my auditor with
L. Ron Hubbard’s technology handled in one
afternoon! I can move my previously
debilitated left arm with ease and comfort
now. This morning I could not raise it
from my side without terrible pain!
“The spiritual cause of the problems is
resolved and the problem no longer
exists.” P.W. Introductory Auditing
“I’ve had many personal successes with
Scientology auditing. My ability to let
others be, without the need to interfere
and unnecessarily interrupt or control
them, came way up. This was a big win, in
the work environment particularly. Also, I
found changes in life, often disconcerting
in the past, became something I just took
in stride. All in all, my ability to
confront and handle the pressures and
stresses of day-to-day interrelationships
increased dramatically and I find myself
calmer and enjoying life much, much more.
K.R. Scientology Auditing
“I was looking for a way to handle the
emotional pain left over from being abused
as a child. I went to a psychologist and
she said, ‘I don’t know how to help you.’
Another one said, ‘All we can do is
‘reprogram’ you.’ The third one told me
maybe she could do something but that it
would take thirty years. Then a friend
told me Scientology could handle my
problem, like that! It’s true. Since I
have had Scientology auditing I no longer
have to live in the past—I can live in the
present and create my future. And it all
happened faster than I would have imagined
possible!” M.S. Scientology Auditing
“Scientology [auditing] have noticeable
increased my ability to learn. In my
business, I must do extensive research,
and I am now able to absorb and understand
a much higher volume of material. This
ability has been invaluable to me.
“Due to [Scientology auditing] I have
become much happier and find my respect
for others has increased. My energy level
has risen to the point where I’ve started
my own business and have become
revitalized as a writer and financial
lecturer.
“Probably the most amazing thing which
has happened to me was the fact of a 20
percent increase in my IQ.” K.G.
Scientology Auditing
“There is so much for me to say about
this fantastic auditing. It handled areas
of myself and my life that I’ve wanted
handled for so long. I’m incredibly happy.
I don’t know when I’ve really ever
attained this before.
“One of the biggest things that
occurred was that I gained
self-respect—something I’ve been without
for a very long time. I now have the
ability to inspect situations with myself
and others and handle accordingly without
shame. It’s a great life I have and will
continue to have. I have a fresh start
now!” K.S. Scientology Auditing

any church of Scientology.
DIANETICS AND SCIENTOLOGY INTRODUCTORY
SERVICES
It is easy for someone new to Scientology
to take his first steps on the Bridge to
Total Freedom. His introduction to the
religion usually comes through reading one
of L. Ron Hubbard’s books and/or attending
a lecture about Dianetics or Scientology
given by a Scientologist at a church or
mission. After realizing there are areas
in his life and environment that he would
like to change for the better, and that
Scientology has a technology that will
help him achieve this, he is usually eager
to begin a service. And with this as the
impetus, he finds Dianetics and
Scientology introductory services which
provide an accessible first step.
While the following services are
described as “introductory,” their power
to bring about positive spiritual benefit
should not be underestimated. Each service
provides much insight into the basic
precepts and practices of Dianetics and
Scientology and furnishes valuable data
one can immediately apply to improve life
— one’s own and that of others.
Dianetics and Scientology is a vast
body of wisdom. It is presented in a
series of gradient levels that enable one
to rise in spiritual awareness and ability
with certainty and stability. And like all
services in Scientology, these initial
ones are designed on an ideal gradient.
Introductory services are usually short
in length and can be completed in a few
evenings at any church or mission.
Several, but by no means all, of these
services are described below. While they
are usually done in the order given below,
this may vary according to an initial
assessment which helps gauge a person’s
current spiritual state. This includes
testing such as a personality profile
which measures ten different traits, the
person’s knowledge of Scientology, what
Scientology books he has read, and other
factors. With the help of a Scientologist
who knows exactly what part of Scientology
best matches the individual’s immediate
needs, he can then progress in the
sequence that is right for him.
His first action before beginning any
service, however, will invariably be to
see the Orientation film which, as
described below, shows him what he will
find in a church of Scientology. The next
step is usually the Success Through
Communication Course which provides
invaluable tools which will help him
progress more effectively in everything he
does in Scientology. In addition, one
finds a lineup of introductory services
which address specific needs which may be
appropriate depending upon the initial
assessment that has been done. All exist,
however, to move him through the
introductory area and onto and up the
Bridge to Total Freedom.

Scientology Introductory Services, contact
your nearest church of Scientology.
Orientation — the Film
Orientation answers the question, “What is
Scientology?” and is the film everyone
sees before beginning their first service.
As its title suggests, the film thoroughly
orients the viewer to what happens inside
a Scientology church and, in fact, shows
him exactly what to expect from the moment
he enters. It also provides an
understanding of the Scientology religion,
its purpose and the vital role it plays in
society. Scientologists from many walks of
life describe what Scientology means to
them and relate the profoundly positive
effects they have experienced through its
application in their lives. By the end of
this film, the viewer will have a clear
understanding of his role in Scientology
and of what he is aiming for.

Life Improvement Courses
A person can make rapid improvement in a
specific area of his life with a Life
Improvement Course. These provide
Scientology fundamentals directly related
to the area for which a person wants
immediate help.
The Scientology Life Improvement Courses
are designed to fit the different needs of
individuals based on their knowledge of
Dianetics and Scientology, what books they
may have read and their situation in life.
These contain the basics of Scientology
technology which can bring immediate
improvement to a specific aspect of an
individual’s existence.
The confusions of modern living require
solutions. A difficulty in a relationship,
a business or family situation can grow
and consume far too much attention. In
fact, it is these seemingly commonplace
problems that often work to distract one
from the more important things in life,
particularly one’s spiritual growth. Each
Life Improvement Course contains
Scientology breakthroughs one can use to
rectify specific problem areas and improve
conditions. There are services addressing
interpersonal relations, overcoming the
ups and downs in life, personal values and
integrity, understanding others, working
more efficiently, marriage, raising
children, and many more.
In every sense of the word, then, these
are practical courses. Each is illustrated
to facilitate understanding, with an
emphasis on practical application. One
learns the theory of basic Scientology
principles relating to each area, then
applies these in course room exercises
until they can be applied in life.
For example, in the Life Improvement
Course which deals with improving
relationships, one discovers ways, based
on Scientology fundamentals, to improve
relationships with others. He learns the
true basis of interpersonal relations, the
affinity, reality and communication (ARC)
triangle, and then practices the precise
steps set forth in the course for
improving or repairing any relationship.
He learns principles of communication and
their application. He learns the Third
Party Law, L. Ron Hubbard’s discovery
concerning the underlying cause of any
conflict, and how to employ this discovery
to resolve strife. Given these and other
tools, he can change and improve his life.
He learns things he can actually do, not
only for his own benefit, but also for the
benefit of others.
Life Improvement Courses are unique to
Scientology. Unlike other religions,
Scientology offers a practical technology
about man that can be applied to actually
improve conditions in life. As one applies
this technology to day-to-day concerns to
better himself and others, he finds he is
now more able to continue his journey to
higher levels of spiritual awareness and
ability.

The Success Through Communication
Course
This course is a vital step for anyone new
to Scientology. Many, many people
experience difficulties in communicating.
Some have trouble expressing themselves,
while others feel uncomfortable in certain
social situations. Still others find it
difficult to initiate a conversation,
while some do not know how to end one.
Communication difficulties are among the
biggest problems people have in everyday
living. Yet in addition to creating
problems in life, this inability is also a
block to spiritual improvement. In fact,
the key to such improvement is the ability
to communicate.
One of the greatest discoveries of
Scientology is the delineation of the
components of communication. All the
spiritual gains experienced in Scientology
stem in one way or another from knowledge
and application of communication.
Effective communication is essential for a
successful auditing session. And
communication constitutes the primary
corner of the ARC triangle, one of
Scientology’s fundamental principles.
Effective communication is integral to
every Scientology religious service and
Scientologists have become known around
the world as the experts on the subject of
communication.
The exact technology of how to
communicate effectively is taught on the
Success Through Communication Course,
which consists of eighteen separate
communication drills for teaching the
basic elements of good communication.
Every student twins with another and the
two work together, reading a drill and
then doing it. Experienced Course
Supervisors are always on hand to help
with difficulties and ensure smooth
progress.
An ability to communicate well is
highly rewarded in life as evidenced by
the esteem accorded artists, entertainers,
television personalities and the like. But
on a more personal scale, one who can
truly communicate gets the more desirable
job, has the better friends, the deeper
relationships and a smoother life than one
who cannot communicate. More importantly,
once one gains the ability to communicate
effectively, he has the key to worlds
previously hidden, including one’s true
spiritual self. This course can be done at
any church of Scientology.
The Anatomy of the Human Mind Course
After being introduced to either Dianetics
or Scientology, people who want to know
more about the mind and about the thetan’s
relationship to the mind take this
service. Here they learn that the human
mind has an exact anatomy. Before
Dianetics, this anatomy was essentially
unknown because those seeking to
understand the mind did so from a wholly
material perspective.
The Anatomy of the Human Mind Course
contains a precise description of the
mind, its components, its workings and its
relationship to man as a spiritual being.
This extensive service includes twenty
lectures, detailing every aspect of the
mind. Each lecture is followed by
demonstrations and practicals so one gains
a comprehensive understanding of such
basics as the reactive mind, mental image
pictures, engrams, the analytical mind,
the being, understanding, the body, its
nervous system and aberration. The Anatomy
of the Human Mind Course imparts a real
understanding of these principles, one
which brings about a vast new
understanding of life. This course can be
done at any church of Scientology.
BOOK ONE SERVICES:
Hubbard Dianetics Seminar Those familiar
with Mr. Hubbard’s Dianetics: The Modern
Science of Mental Health can experience
the workability of Dianetics technology
for themselves by attending a Dianetics
Seminar and participating in Dianetics
auditing. One need not have read the book
to participate.
In so doing, one can begin to rid
himself of the barriers to his confidence,
well-being and success.
A Dianetics Seminar begins with a video
presentation that explains basic Dianetics
principles and what occurs in an auditing
session. Then one reads selected portions
of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental
Health and “pairs up” with another seminar
participant to practice auditing
procedures. After only a few hours he will
be familiar enough with Dianetics
technology to audit another person or to
receive auditing himself, always under the
guidance of experienced seminar
supervisors who are highly trained in
Dianetics auditing. During the seminar one
may participate in as much Dianetics
auditing as he wishes and thereby gain
firsthand understanding and benefits of
its power.
Hubbard Dianetics Auditor Course A
Hubbard Dianetics Seminar graduate is
likely to want to continue co-auditing
while learning more about Dianetics. If
so, he will probably decide to take the
Hubbard Dianetics Auditor Course, which
provides the perfect way for him to
sharpen his skills as a Dianetics auditor
and gain more experience with, and benefit
from, Dianetics auditing. This is an
extensive course containing tape-recorded
auditing demonstrations by L. Ron Hubbard.
Assisted by a trained and experienced
Course Supervisor, individuals on the
Hubbard Dianetics Auditor Course learn
exactly how to deal with anything that
could arise in an auditing session through
hands-on application of the procedures in
Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental
Health. This course can be done at any
church of Scientology.
Introductory Dianetics Auditing Anyone
interested in experiencing Dianetics
auditing, exactly as is learned on the
Hubbard Dianetics Auditor Course, can
receive auditing from an experienced
Dianetics auditor. This is available in
blocks of auditing to provide the greatest
possible benefit. Just as it did in 1950,
Dianetics auditing can bring about
life-changing results by addressing the
unwanted elements in life that hold one
back. One can recognize and resolve the
hidden sources of pain, nervousness,
unwanted behavior patterns, psychosomatic
illness, negative emotions and more. And
it is available for everyone. There is no
need even to have read a book or to have
done a course to discover how Dianetics
auditing can change one’s life. This
service can be done at any church of
Scientology.
BEGINNING SCIENTOLOGIST GRADUATE
COURSE:
Hubbard Qualified Scientologist Course
Everyone is involved in life whether he is
happy about it or not. There are, however,
basic laws on the way life operates, and a
knowledge of these laws can make life
easier to understand and provide tools to
improve conditions. This is the subject of
the Hubbard Qualified Scientologist
Course, the last and most wide-ranging of
the introductory courses, and is usually
done following the Success Through
Communication Course.
This service offers a broad and
thorough grounding in key Scientology
principles and introduces one to
Scientology auditing. It consists of six
of L. Ron Hubbard’s basic books, a filmed
interview with Mr. Hubbard in which he
discusses how he developed Dianetics and
Scientology and explains their principles,
and many practical assignments that apply
what has been studied to real life
situations. From these practicals one can
come to a certainty as to how to apply
these principles rather than treating them
as simply some kind of an intellectual
pursuit. On this service one learns to
audit basic Scientology processes and
gains experience auditing others. He
drills communication fundamentals and
learns how to properly minister an
auditing session. After drilling different
auditing techniques, he then both audits
another and receives auditing himself.
These powerful techniques include methods
to spiritually assist those suffering from
illness or an accident, to make an
intoxicated person sober, and processes
which greatly raise one’s awareness of his
past.
The Hubbard Qualified Scientologist
Course gives one an excellent general
understanding of what Scientology is
about, and how it is applied to help
others as well as oneself. It could be
said that after completing this course one
has “graduated” from the introductory
services and is now ready to move up the
Bridge towards the state of Clear, and
beyond.
INTRODUCTORY AUDITING:
The surest way to understand what
Scientology auditing can accomplish
towards bettering an individual’s life is
to go to a Scientology church or mission
and actually experience an auditing
session with a highly trained auditor. In
fact, this is a vital step for new
preclears.
In charting the route to higher
spiritual states, L. Ron Hubbard developed
processes for taking one to the next
higher level of awareness. Many of these
processes are designed specifically for
the person just beginning auditing. There
are hundreds of processes which can be
used to introduce one to what auditing is
and demonstrate the gains available from
it. These are processes that deal, among
other things, with increasing
communication abilities, raising
awareness, expanding affinity and
willingness to assume responsibility, and
even resolving the causes of unhappiness
rooted in failures to adhere to a moral
code or helping someone become able to
learn. Introductory auditing can produce
remarkable changes in conditions and
increase spiritual awareness.
There are also many other kinds of
introductory auditing, including:
Group Processing. Here, an auditor
increases the ability of individuals being
audited as part of a group. Group
Processing improves a person’s alertness
and awareness of the environment, as well
as his communication. Some individuals
have reported spectacular wins including
increased havingness and even
exteriorization. For more than four
decades Scientologists — newcomers and
old-timers alike — have enjoyed the
excitement, wins and gains of Group
Processing sessions, and, in fact, the
sheer fun of them.
Assists. These are actions that are
taken to assist the spirit to deal with
trauma, losses or upsets, or confront
physical difficulties; while not intended
to replace medical treatment, they do much
to help alleviate physical pain and
discomfort.
To learn how to help others with
assists or to receive assists contact The
nearest Church of Scientology.
Marriage counseling. This addresses
marital problems and, through the
application of Scientology technology,
helps couples create healthy marriages
based on trust.
Marriage Counseling is available at any
Church of Scientology.
The fact that these services are
introductory in no way diminishes their
precision or their potential for providing
insight into life. In fact, since these
services provide an individual with his
first spiritual gains from auditing, they
often end up as among the most memorable
services he will ever experience.
There are also other services an
individual can do to begin his Scientology
journey if, for example, he has
difficulties with study or comprehension,
or if he has a history of extensive drug
use. These services all have the objective
of assisting one to take his first steps
onto the Bridge and continue on the path
to total freedom.
Life does not have to be an unhappy
plight, but one would be hard pressed to
find a person who has not had his share of
knocks or who cannot name some aspect of
life he would wish to improve. Millions
have found the answers on introductory
services at a Scientology church or
mission. And, armed with these answers,
they are ready to continue up the Bridge
to Total Freedom.
CHAPLAIN AND MINISTERIAL SERVICES
While Scientology ministers perform many
of the traditional ceremonies and services
common to most religions, they also
conduct services that are unique to
Scientology.
Churches have always provided guidance and
succor to their parishioners in times of
need. In fact, beyond strictly spiritual
concerns, churches traditionally have seen
their mission as easing temporal
suffering, helping where help is required
and restoring dignity to men and women at
pivotal points in their lives.
By longstanding tradition, Scientology
ministers also have acted to ease
suffering and provide counsel and succor
to those in need, whether a member of
their congregation or simply someone in
the community who may need help. In fact,
one cannot function as a Scientology
minister without a genuine and overriding
desire to help others, whether to ease
current suffering or to help people
advance up the Bridge. But unlike
ministers and priests of other religions,
Scientology ministers bring more than
compassion and care to the needy—they
bring a highly trained expertise in
Scientology techniques that can resolve
any problem at hand, no matter how
insurmountable it may seem to the
individual involved.
Ministerial services are important for
any religion, but for individual
Scientologists they take on special
significance—it is by helping others that
they help accomplish Scientology’s goal of
making this world a better place for
everyone.
CHURCH CEREMONIES
A Scientology wedding ceremony
Scientology ministers perform many of the
same types of ceremonies and services that
ministers and priests of other religions
perform. Each Sunday, the church’s
Chaplain, or another minister, conducts a
weekly service for members of the church,
which is open to nonmembers as well. At
this service, the minister will speak
about some topic related to an important
Scientology principle or practice and
discuss how it can be applied in daily
life. A typical Scientology sermon may
address the idea that a person is a
spiritual being, the eight dynamics, the
Axioms of Scientology or perhaps the Creed
of the Church. These weekly services do
much to revitalize the religious
commitment of Scientologists, but they
also offer hope of a better life to the
non-Scientologists who are always welcome
to attend.
In addition, Scientology congregations
celebrate weddings and christenings with
their own formal ceremonies and mark the
passing of their fellows with funeral
rites. The Chaplain often conducts these
ceremonies, although any ordained
Scientology minister can also officiate.
Scientologists find that Scientology
services, which address the spirit in
accordance with the religion’s teachings,
are uniquely suited to their needs and
impart a special quality to these
occasions.
CHAPLAIN SERVICES
Scientology marriage counseling helps
create an atmosphere of honesty and open
communication between marital partners.
The Chaplain also ministers to
Scientologists on a more personal level.
Indeed, it is well known within the
Scientology community that if there is
some personal difficulty threatening one’s
progress up the Bridge and there seems
nowhere to turn, the Chaplain is always
available for counseling and guidance.
Such aid can take many forms.
For example, if a couple are
experiencing martial discord and find that
it is affecting their progress in auditing
and training, they can turn to the
Chaplain to help them work through their
difficulties. Chaplains are trained in
ministering Scientology marriage
counseling, which is an exact technology
for alleviating martial problems that
addresses the root of all such
difficulties: transgressions against the
couple’s previously agreed moral code
which now inhibits their communication.
Scientology marriage counseling not only
restores communication, but also brings
about a resurgence of the affinity and
reality that go with it. Utilizing these
techniques, Chaplains and other
Scientology ministers have successfully
salvaged thousands of marriages.
In addition to salvaging marriages, and
as part of his larger effort to restore
family unity, the Chaplain is often called
upon to help the child. He can do so in
many ways.
The young student suffering through his
studies will find relief through the
application of study technology. The child
who cannot get along with his friends can
quickly resolve the matter with
communication skills learned on a course
specifically designed for him.
The ill or injured child, and even
infants, may be given assists—techniques
developed by L. Ron Hubbard to alleviate
the spiritual component of physical pain,
shock and emotional trauma. Helpful to
people of all ages, assists operate on the
principle that one tends to withdraw
mentally or spiritually from an injured
area. Only by restoring communication with
this area can one bring the spiritual
element into healing, thereby greatly
speeding the healing process. Assists are
used to relieve stress and physical aches
and pains, or to orient a confused or
distraught individual to his present
environment.
Possessing all these tools and more,
the Chaplain is well equipped to counsel
parents and help their children grow up
happy, confident and able.
There are, of course, many problems in
life capable of creating such difficulties
that one’s spiritual progress is hindered.
These problems include, for example, a
sudden dismissal from a job, an unexpected
financial reversal, or the loss of a loved
one. The Chaplain is there to help in all
of these circumstances.
Regardless of whether the Scientologist
is currently active on the Bridge or not,
and regardless of his financial condition,
the Chaplain is sure to help.
Scientology Center, or using his own
auditing skills, the Chaplain will arrange
for assists or other auditing to be
ministered to one in need. Or the Chaplain
may recommend a book by L. Ron Hubbard or
a Life Improvement or extension course for
more guidance. Sometimes merely the act of
listening to, understanding and
acknowledging someone who is troubled is
sufficient to lift his spirits and start
him on the road to recovery.
The Chaplain also acts as a “port of
last call” for a Scientologist who may
have encountered a problem while
participating in religious services at his
church. The Chaplain therefore is
constantly alert for the rare occasion
when an individual experiences some
Scientology service that he is not happy
with, invariably because it was not
ministered correctly. In such instances
the Chaplain either arranges for or
himself provides auditing to the person.
By applying the technology in strict
accordance with the scripture, the
Chaplain is able to save the individual
and lead him back onto the path to
spiritual freedom.
The Chaplain also helps Scientologists
who are involved in a dispute, personal
disagreement or misunderstanding by
assisting them to resolve the problem
through the application of Scientology
religious principles in the Church’s
ecclesiastical justice procedures.
OTHER MINISTERIAL SERVICES
The Chaplain is just one of many other
ministers on staff at local churches who
also provide lifesaving services to
Scientologists. For example, some ordained
Scientology ministers are highly trained
in the Scientology technology of
confessionals. They hear confessionals
from any parishioner who has committed
some moral transgression and who wants to
take responsibility for correcting his
past conduct. They also are empowered to
grant spiritual forgiveness to a
Scientologist who honestly and fully
partakes of the confessional. When
forgiveness is granted, it always brings
remarkable results—not only is the
individual’s desire for advancement on the
Bridge renewed, but his life looks a whole
lot brighter. True spiritual resurgence
can thus be achieved.
Another minister on church staff who
can play an important role in a
Scientologist’s spiritual life is the
church’s Ethics Officer. One of the main
responsibilities of the Ethics Officer is
to help parishioners resolve problems they
encounter in their lives that are
adversely affecting their progress up the
Bridge. Trained Ethics Officers are able
to help individuals sort out areas of
their lives that may be spiritually
distressing and preventing them from
experiencing full gains in training or
auditing. Ethics Officers also counsel
Scientologists who are troubled by
antisocial individuals whose intentions
and actions are inimical to the
parishioner’s spiritual well-being.
L. Ron Hubbard discovered the basics of
ethics and developed many tools that are
used by Ethics Officers to help
Scientologists lead happier, more ethical
lives, and thus become more able to attain
their spiritual goals.
A Scientology minister plays a role
that is both traditional and uniquely
nontraditional at the same time. That so
much of his work is aimed at helping the
infirm, the estranged and the saddened is
traditional. What is not traditional,
however, is that he can do more than offer
them sympathy and compassion that is based
upon common sense and faith. With the
tools provided by L. Ron Hubbard, he can
actually better their conditions.
