WHAT IS SCIENTOLOGY TRAINING?
Home Page
Training is a way to learn the spiritual
technology of Scientology. It is the word
used to describe the study of Scientology
principles by a parishioner so they can be
applied to accomplish the purpose of
improving conditions in life, both in the
person’s own and in the lives of others.
A fundamental premise of Scientology is
that man is basically good and can improve
conditions in his life. However,
Scientology cannot promise to do anything
by itself. Only the individual can bring
about his own improvement by applying the
teachings of Scientology to himself and
those around him. This is why one learns
to apply the principles of Scientology
through training.
THE PRACTICE OF SCIENTOLOGY
Within the vast amount of data which makes
up Scientology’s religious philosophy
there are many principles which, when
learned, give one a new and broader view
of life. These principles amount to a huge
area of observation in the humanities. The
data exists for a person to think with, to
work with, to wonder with, to accept or
reject as he wishes. It is a body of
knowledge there for the learning. There is
nothing authoritarian in it. It is
valuable purely as a body of knowledge.
From this body of wisdom the second
division of Scientology—the application of
the principles of Scientology’s
philosophy—is derived. The extraordinary
achievement of Dianetics and Scientology
has been the development of exact, precise
methods to increase man’s spiritual
awareness and capabilities. Other efforts
along this line provided only sporadic or
temporary results—if any. Using
Scientology, life-enhancing improvements
can be obtained when exactly applied.
The importance of application in
Scientology comes from the fact that L.
Ron Hubbard developed as part of the
religion an actual technology that enables
one to use his discoveries to better
oneself and others. Technology means the
methods of application of the principles
of something, as opposed to mere knowledge
of the thing itself. And, using L. Ron
Hubbard’s technology, applying the
methods, one can heighten his perceptions
and awareness, increase his abilities and
lead a better, more fulfilling life. In
short, one can be unhindered by others’
ideas that man cannot change and that one
can be no better than he was born to be.
The term technology is used with regard
to the application of Scientology
principles. Many technologies are extant
today, technologies to build bridges and
technologies to fire rockets into space.
But with the work of L. Ron Hubbard, for
the first time there exists a proven,
workable technology to improve the
functions of the mind and rehabilitate the
potential of the spirit. One learns this
through training.
A DESCRIPTION OF SCIENTOLOGY TRAINING
A fundamental idea of Scientology is that
increased spiritual awareness is the only
factor which offers any road to increased
survival and happiness.
Scientology contains the anatomy of the
reactive mind in its axioms and the
discipline and know-how necessary to
handle and control the laws of life. The
practice of Scientology, then, is composed
in equal parts of auditing and training in
Scientology principles which includes the
technology of their application. Knowing
the mechanisms by which spiritual freedom
can be lost is itself a freedom and places
one outside their influence.
Auditing lets one see how something
happened, training teaches one why.
Therefore, because of the importance of
training, one will find Scientologists
studying the works of L. Ron Hubbard in
any church of Scientology. If one were to
look in on them, anywhere in the world,
the scene would be the same:
Scientologists seated at tables read
the written works of L. Ron Hubbard,
dictionaries at hand. Some, wearing
headphones, listen to his lectures, while
others drill the principles of application
— all in a precisely laid out sequence.
There are no teachers present. Instead,
an ambulatory Course Supervisor moves from
individual to individual, monitoring their
progress, while a Course Administrator
provides any needed materials. Here one
sees enthusiastic people, not only
assimilating data, but actually learning
how to apply it.
This is Scientology training, and it is
unique in the field of learning.
Training is the way to learn the
technology of Scientology. Technology
implies use. There is a gap between
knowledge and the application of that
knowledge. By becoming trained, a person
becomes able to use the truths found in
Scientology to actually improve conditions
in life.
The practice of Scientology emphasizes
application. What exactly does one do to
reunite a father and a son, to ease the
suffering of a widow or repair a failing
marriage? Other religions and practices
espouse how one must maintain faith, work
out differences or endure with dignity.
But does such advice, however
well-meaning, actually make a difference?
When a Scientologist enrolls on a
Scientology course aimed at providing him
the means to better any relationship, he
will actually acquire an understanding of
the subject, and equally important, the
skill to apply it.
By way of an example, let us suppose
that a Scientologist is faced with the
prospect of a friend’s impending divorce.
A trained Scientologist has learned why a
marriage — any marriage — fails. He
understands why good communication ceases
between partners and how affinity becomes
lowered. Knowing this, he can do something
effective to salvage a marriage. He knows
methods of reestablishing communication
between estranged husbands and bitter
wives, and how to rekindle love all but
extinguished by marital transgressions.
Training in Scientology gives him what
nothing else can: a truly workable means
of dealing with real-life situations.
Someone who has only participated in
auditing as a preclear might understand
part of a problem in his own marriage but
he will not have a complete understanding
of it, much less the skills necessary to
help others understand theirs.
The practice of Scientology therefore
invariably includes gaining knowledge
through training in Scientology
principles. By learning the subject, one
comes to own the philosophy of Scientology
for himself and so is able to improve his
own life and the lives of others.
HOW DO SCIENTOLOGISTS TRAIN?
During his research, L. Ron Hubbard made
many advances in how best to educate
people and these are applied in training
services ministered by the Church. He
isolated the fundamentals of learning and
codified these into a technology of study.
Study technology is a separate field in
itself, with application to any subject of
learning. It is used in all Scientology
training but is equally useful in the
study of any subject.
Among elements unique to Scientology
course rooms is the Course Supervisor, an
expert in the technology of study, adept
at locating and handling any barriers or
obstacles to understanding which one might
encounter. The Supervisor does not
lecture, nor in any way add his own
rendition of the subject. This point is
important because the results obtained in
Scientology come only from closely
following the technology exactly as
written by Mr. Hubbard. The subject has
already been researched, tested and
well-proven as workable in application.
Verbal renditions passed on from teacher
to student would inevitably contain
alterations from the original, however
unintentional, until Scientology’s
efficacy would be lost. This is why
considerable attention is paid to ensuring
a student receives only the pure rendition
as written or spoken by Mr. Hubbard
himself.
Instead, the Supervisor helps the
individual to grasp the materials, always
stressing understanding and application.
This method of education has been found to
enable individuals to understand more and
be far better able to use what they have
learned than traditional methods of
instruction.
Scientology training allows individuals
to learn at their own pace. Each course is
organized around what is called a
checksheet, another innovation in the
technology of study developed by Mr.
Hubbard. A checksheet is a means of
arranging and presenting the materials of
a subject in a step-by-step manner to
facilitate learning. Checksheets lay out
the sequence of study and the practical
application drills to be followed.
The materials of a Scientology training
service consist of books, other
publications, films and recorded lectures
by L. Ron Hubbard. These are laid out in
the checksheet and the student studies
them in the order listed. The individual
progresses from one step to the next only
when he is ready. There is no “getting
left behind,” no expecting him to blindly
accept the data, or other such
humiliations all too prevalent in the
society’s educational system. A
Scientology training service is solely for
the benefit of the individual; his own
advancement in knowledge is the
determining factor of progress.
Since the emphasis is on doing, not
study for the sake of study, the
individual soon finds himself working with
others on the practical aspects of his
course, studying together to become
proficient in what they have learned. An
atmosphere of mutual assistance pervades
every Scientology course room.
In addition to studying, each
Scientology course requires direct
application of the data learned. As one
progresses through the checksheet, he is
required to demonstrate concepts, apply
the information to situations in his own
life and practice the procedures or
techniques being studied until proficient
in their use. A balance is struck between
study of Scientology principles and
practical application of these principles.
The product of a Scientology course is
someone who not only understands what he
has studied but who can demonstrate this
understanding through application.
There are course rooms for reading
assignments and listening to taped
lectures, while other course rooms are
reserved for people to drill the
application of their materials.
Another feature of Scientology training
is the use of films as a tool to teach
correct technical application. These films
cover specific aspects of Scientology,
showing exactly how they are applied in
auditing. The films were written by L. Ron
Hubbard and many of them were also
produced, directed and narrated by him.
When someone completes a training
service they are awarded a certificate of
accomplishment to signify attainment of a
particular level of knowledge or skill.
SCOPE OF TRAINING IN SCIENTOLOGY
The broad scope of Scientology is divided
into numerous courses, ranging from
introductory courses that teach basic
principles, to more extensive ones that
train auditors, to courses which contain
knowledge about the ultimate capabilities
of the thetan, to those that cover the
full philosophic and technical materials
of Dianetics and Scientology. There is
much to know but all of it is knowable and
as one learns more, his view of life
becomes clearer and more understandable.
At the heart of all instruction in
Scientology are the auditor training
services offered in the Academy of
Scientology in any church.
Scientology Academy training gives one
an understanding of man, his potentials
and the difficulties that confront him,
far in excess of anything taught in the
humanities or social sciences. Here, one
becomes aware of how Scientology
principles apply to situations anywhere in
life. With this knowledge a person
understands why some people are successful
while others fail. He understands why one
man is happy while another is not. He
knows why some relationships are stable
and why others fall apart. Life is not a
mystery to someone who has studied
Scientology. In this respect, training
offers every bit as much personal insight
as does auditing.
All lives are occasionally beset with
trouble. A child falls and gets a scrape,
the drinking problem of a neighbor’s wife
is discovered, a friend’s business is
failing, a parent becomes ill. The trained
Scientologist can bring to bear what he
has learned in the Academy to any
situation in life and he can do something
about it.
The skills acquired in training are a
discipline in living and a know-how of the
parts of life. Training in Scientology is
the bridge between one’s own learning and
experience and livingness, and the truths
offered to him in Scientology. It is a
bridge from every human being to an
understanding of life.
The Academy training services teach
different aspects of this understanding as
well as methods of their application, a
combination which brings about certainty
that one does, in fact, know. Since life
is an activity, the emphasis is on
application. The student, then, learns the
actions which constitute their most
important application, auditing. This
encompasses an understanding of the
communication which takes place between
auditor and preclear and how to foster
good communication.
Once one has learned to do this within
the discipline of auditing it becomes
simple to do it in life. One thoroughly
studies the theory and mechanics of the
E-Meter and then drills with it until he
is proficient in its handling and
operation. He learns the basic rules of
auditing and how to minister a session to
a preclear. Each step is studied and then
drilled to competence. He watches training
films in the Academy film room in order to
learn the correct way to perform a
particular aspect of auditing. He learns
the various codes, laws and axioms that
pertain to auditing so that he has a
thorough grasp of these basics.
Later steps of his training build upon
earlier steps and he is gradually brought
up to actual handling of specific laws by
which life operates. He next learns exact
auditing processes and drills them with
other students to the point of
proficiency.
After two weeks of intensive training the
student can complete enough study and
drilling to be ready to begin auditing
another on elementary processes.
His sessions are carefully supervised by
highly trained auditors in the church who
help him correctly apply his materials. He
audits his preclear daily and fulfills
specific auditing requirements listed on
his checksheet. Application, whether in
life or in auditing, is the prime purpose
of his training.
By bringing improvement to another
person the student gains the certainty
that he in fact does understand his
materials. He confirms his competence in
handling the elements of life and his
certainty in his own abilities rises. This
is a factor equally as important to one’s
spiritual advancement as the personal
gains one receives from being audited.
L. Ron Hubbard stressed that half the
gains in Scientology come from training in
its principles. The truth of this becomes
obvious when one considers how much a
knowledge of Scientology clarifies a
person’s view of life. This naturally
includes a greater understanding of what
goes on in his own auditing sessions and
so makes his own progress as a preclear
more rapid and certain. Such understanding
is gained by training.
In addition, there is considerable
pride and personal satisfaction seeing
another become more able and happier as a
result of one’s help. But regardless of
whether one chooses to audit full time,
one is alive and, trained in Scientology,
he has new understandings he can use.
After completing the auditing
requirements on the checksheet, he
graduates from his course. An auditor does
six major training services in sequence as
part of his Academy training. The
completion of each signifies a level of
skill attained by the auditor and is
denoted by a classification, Class 0
through Class V. More advanced
classifications, numbering up through
Class XII, can be obtained on higher-level
training services available at specific
churches around the world. Each level
follows the efficient and thorough pattern
of instruction described earlier, but adds
more advanced theory and procedures. The
result is an auditor who becomes more and
more knowledgeable in the subject. In this
way the different levels of training
parallel the levels through which a
preclear advances in auditing.
Upon completion of specific training
services, the auditor gains further
know-how in applying what he has learned
under highly qualified supervision on an
internship. Interning turns an auditor
into an expert by doing. The auditor
ministers auditing to many different
preclears on actions in which he has been
trained. Such experience imparts the
unshakable certainty that comes only from
the experience of doing something over and
over.
Auditing techniques work 100 percent of
the time if they are applied correctly.
Though the basic principles of auditing
are simple in themselves, skill in the
application of auditing techniques must be
gained by an auditor before he will be
able to produce invariable results.
Precision is a requisite for
accomplishing many things in life but when
one is dealing with life itself, which is
the preclear, slight variations in
application of a procedure can
considerably lessen the result obtained.
It has long been established that greater
gain accrues when the auditing procedure
is ministered precisely in all its
aspects. The miracles of auditing are the
culmination of dozens, even hundreds, of
precisely learned, drilled and applied
points concerning the wording of
procedures, operation of the E-Meter,
communication with the preclear and so on.
The many steps of an auditing session,
correctly taken, result in giant strides
of spiritual improvement for the preclear.
A highly trained auditor spends
thousands of course room hours learning
his skills and perfecting them in
practice. It is usual for an
auditor-in-training to put in forty or
more hours per week. He invests far more
time in a study of the mind than does a
practitioner in any similar field. At the
highest levels of classification, an
auditor will have studied a number of
course hours comparable to twelve years of
classes at a college or university.
Training in Scientology enables one to
face and handle existence. The skills of
effective communication, of how to really
help another, and how to face whatever
life may present—all of these attributes
have as many applications as there are
situations in life requiring a handling.
The need for auditors is great since it
is plain that individuals can be salvaged
only one at a time. Unlike many other
religions, this salvation ultimately
occurs in Scientology in the one-on-one
relationship between auditor and preclear.
Many Scientologists train to become
auditors, and anyone who wishes to help
his fellow man can do the same. But of no
less importance, one can gain greater
skill in handling life than he ever
thought possible. There is no more
worthwhile purpose than helping one’s
fellow and no better way to accomplish
this purpose than by becoming an auditor.
Auditors apply what they have learned to
help others with auditing and to change
conditions wherever they find that
conditions need improving.
This is the mission of the trained
Scientologist, and it is in his
understanding, his compassion and his
skill that the dreams of a better world
reside.
THE VALUE OF SCIENTOLOGY
Through auditing and training,
Scientologists have come to understand
that much in our modern world is
transitory and impermanent and based on
things not surviving or on things that are
in fact being destroyed. They know the
practice of Scientology can rehabilitate
the individual to his full potentials and
that these gains last forever, bringing
him to a realization of his own
immortality.
Caught on an economic treadmill, hit at
every side with the materialism of our
age, it is hard for many to grasp that
higher states could even exist.
But they do exist.
One sees this for himself when he
reaches for them.
Once one starts moving up, there is no
wish to stop. The scent of freedom is too
strong.
The practice of Scientology is
concerned with a better state for man and
opens the way with a certain and sure
bridge into a future. The way has been
dreamed of in ages past. For man it never
existed until now.
It exists in Scientology.
RESULTS
While the results that can be obtained
from use of Dianetics and Scientology
principles and the application of its
techniques are best understood by seeing
it for oneself, here is a sampling of the
gains Scientologists report having
experienced from Scientology training.
These are just a few of the millions of
successes on file in churches around the
world relating to the benefits received
from Scientology training.
The following should not be construed
as claims made by the Church concerning
personal benefits any individual will
experience. The Church provides the
services. The results speak for
themselves.
“Before [this course] I was having a
rough time talking to people. I wouldn’t
be able to start a conversation or if I
had to leave, I couldn’t end one either.
But then I did this course and I am now
able to talk to people and get my
communications across. I can also answer
questions easily without being embarrassed
and can make friends much more easily and
just lead a happier life.” C.E.
Introductory Course
“The Course has meant regained
knowledge, regained awareness, abilities,
freedom to speak my mind, listen better,
hear more, speak more precisely and
clearly and it goes on and on. A miracle
has occurred to me!” M.A. Introductory
Course
“I was withdrawn, extremely shy and
afraid to communicate. Then I did [this
course]. As a result, the world became
brighter and people were less of a threat
to me. I became happier and willing to
hold a conversation with anyone. There was
a feeling of control in my environment and
the sensation of being very big as a
spirit. It was the best feeling I had ever
experienced.” N.D. Introductory Course
“This was possibly the most demanding
training I’ve ever done—and the most
rewarding. In learning to audit, I’ve seen
sick people jump out of bed and dance
after a session. I’ve watched psychosis
melt away before my eyes. I’ve seen
preclears who felt they had no recall of
the past suddenly remember. I’ve seen
major life ruins vanish in one short
session, after years of the preclear
trying to handle them with other means.”
D.M. Auditor Training
“My life changed radically from the
knowledge gained on [this course], and I
will continue to put every part of what I
have learned into application.
“Without doubt, [this course] was the
most spectacular adventure of my life. I
gained a wealth of knowledge and
understanding broad enough and technically
perfected to the point where I know with
absolute certainty how to set any
individual free. I was put in awe many
times over at the simplicities and truths
presented on the course and I felt myself
changing as I have never felt before.
“While the course taught me the
technology of auditing, what I really
learned was the technology of LIFE. I
stepped into a new realm of capability and
stability.
“I am forever grateful to L. Ron
Hubbard for this legacy, for it is a truly
amazing body of truths expansive enough to
fill the universe, yet maintaining a total
simplicity. With it we can free and are
freeing beings.” P.A. Auditor Training
One can do Scientology training at any
church of Scientology.
BEGINNING SCIENTOLOGIST GRADUATE
COURSE:
Hubbard Qualified Scientologist Course
Everyone is involved in life whether he is
happy about it or not. There are, however,
basic laws on the way life operates, and a
knowledge of these laws can make life
easier to understand and provide tools to
improve conditions. This is the subject of
the Hubbard Qualified Scientologist
Course, the last and most wide-ranging of
the introductory courses, and is usually
done following the Success Through
Communication Course.
This service offers a broad and
thorough grounding in key Scientology
principles and introduces one to
Scientology auditing. It consists of six
of L. Ron Hubbard’s basic books, a filmed
interview with Mr. Hubbard in which he
discusses how he developed Dianetics and
Scientology and explains their principles,
and many practical assignments that apply
what has been studied to real life
situations. From these practicals one can
come to a certainty as to how to apply
these principles rather than treating them
as simply some kind of an intellectual
pursuit. On this service one learns to
audit basic Scientology processes and
gains experience auditing others. He
drills communication fundamentals and
learns how to properly minister an
auditing session. After drilling different
auditing techniques, he then both audits
another and receives auditing himself.
These powerful techniques include methods
to spiritually assist those suffering from
illness or an accident, to make an
intoxicated person sober, and processes
which greatly raise one’s awareness of his
past.
The Hubbard Qualified Scientologist
Course gives one an excellent general
understanding of what Scientology is
about, and how it is applied to help
others as well as oneself. It could be
said that after completing this course one
has “graduated” from the introductory
services and is now ready to move up the
Bridge towards the state of Clear, and
beyond.
The Hubbard Qualified Scientologist
course is available at any Church of
Scientology.
